So I was watching Martin and it got me thinking about how the “old school” shows were funny, entertaining but also showed positive images for African Americans, especially women as opposed to the foolishness that has infiltrated television in the past years.
How,Why and When did this happen were these types of shows were taken of the air and replaced with ignorance?
I mean really think about it.
These tv programs and many countless others shed a positive light on the African American experience in the early 90s-00s
It wasn’t preachy or in your face It was thinly masked by comedy.
If you look at the past shows in comparison to the “basketball wives & Love and Hip Hop” type programming,you may appreciate these “old school”shows for more than just the laughter.Take these shows for instance:
MARTIN
Gina and Pam were both career women who always strived for better in their work lives.
One of Pam’s dreams was to have a corner office with a view and Gina was promoted to an executive at her entertainment company.
Even though the ongoing joke was that Pam was always looking for a man,when she was faced with a rich man who was going to take care of all her needs she declined because she knew she was more valuable than to be bought.
Heck even Sheneneh OWNED her own business as a beautician.
And for the men, we don’t know exactly what tommy or cole did but Martin was a successful radio dj who eventually got his own short lived talk show.
LIVING SINGLE
Everyone was pretty successful on the show
-Khadijah owned and managed a successful Magazine
-Max was one of her firms top Lawyers
-Sinclair(my favorite character) although not as successful as the others was always striving to fulfill her dream,she never gave up on being an actor.
-Regine lol although she was a gold digger waiting for that rich and influential man to take her to another level of wealth she was working on a soap opera and was a buyer for a boutique so its not like she wasn’t working. Her gold digger ways were subsided temporarily.
-Obie successful handyman
-Kyle worked as stockbroker on Wall Street.GIRLFRIENDS
Joan- lawyer/run a successful restaurant/bar
William-lawyer who eventually made partner
Tony-real estate broker
Mya-best selling author
Lynn-who was searching to find herself but she did have 5 masters degrees
A DIFFERENT WORLD
Way too many characters to go through but a setting in a collage were African American students are striving for a higher education so they can have a great future for their lives.And a supporting cast of teachers janitors and coaches that helped lead them in the right paths of life.
